If you decide to map Caps Lock to another key, that makes it easier to visualize the most comfortable key. KeyTweak can be made portable by extracting its installer with 7-Zip.

Remapping Caps Lock is easy, click the key on the virtual keyboard (key 30) and then decide whether to disable it or remap it to another key. To disable Caps Lock entirely press Disable Key and then Apply. To remap Caps Lock click on the Choose New Remapping drop down and select the target key, then press Remap Key and Apply. The program will then popup a warning to say a restart is required although you can get away with logging off and back on. To reverse the procedure click Restore All Defaults or Enable Key. Note KeyTweak needs to be run as administrator.

Key Mapper

What we quite like about Key Mapper is it's a small portable executable and easy to use with just a few clicks required to remap or disable the Caps Lock key. This program also uses a virtual keyboard which makes things easier when remapping one key to another.

To disable or remap Caps Lock, all you have to do is firstly double click on it to bring up the mapping window. If you want to disable it fully just press the Disable button. Alternatively click on the groups, categories and lists to find what key you want to remap to (or press Capture and press the key) and press the Map button. Log off and back on for the mapping/disabling to take effect. Key Mapper requires the .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed from Optional Features in Windows 10 and 8.1

Disable Caps Lock Instant Toggle On or Off

If you are someone that just wants to turn off the Caps Lock key because it's an annoyance and you keep pressing it by mistake, this last tool could be a solution. Created in AutoHotKey by 1 hour Software, CAPshift places a half second delay on the Caps Lock key so if you accidentally press it while typing, you won't actually turn Caps Lock on. Holding Caps Lock for half a second to a second will toggle it on or off while holding down for more than a second will popup a menu.

The menu is also accessible from the tray icon right click and offers the options to turn Caps Lock on or off and to change the case of any selected text. This is a useful feature and can quickly change text to uppercase, lowercase or titlecase. CAPshift also adds half second delays to the F1, Insert, Num Lock and Scroll Lock keys. If you don't want those keys to be affected, the settings ini file can be edited to turn them off. Caps Lock will be automatically turned off after 2 minutes of keyboard inactivity. CAPshift is portable and only consumes around 2MB while sitting in the tray.

Just as a car has a Seat belt warning beep or Washing machine beeps when its load is finished (or mine does) – It'd be handy to have a similar warning for when the craps lock has been pressed (purposefully or not) – I've always simply remapped it to the letter M (M for MAPS in games) but a simple on screen pop up &/or warning noise would be so nice of Microsoft to add – they've added around 50 or so other things I have no intention of ever using in Windows 10 and had to search out multiple ways of disabling them (ie 'WINAERO TWEAKER' for those who wish an easy entry into tweaking what you DONT like or items you miss from previous OS's that you'd like returned easily such Win 7s screen snip or 7s photo viewer or paint or… you name it, it's basically possible ND A whole LOT MORE INCLUDING THE DISABLING OF TELEMETRY AT THE TICK OF A BOX (FFS Caps lock, see why i'm here, i forgot the regedit tweak i did 6 years+ ago on the Win 7 instal – forced to use 10 and . so I'm back for it again…) K – also 'SORDUM' software dev also has many individual tools you may wish to consider…).
Wouldn't it be 'nice' if Micro$haft would try engaging with their user base and add what we DO want and remove what we have time & telemetry time again told them what we don't want (oops typo, telemetry – that damn word slowing EVERYTHING down on my computer… as usual.) talking of oxy moron, Whats the point in collecting telemetry when the obvious concensous is the majoriety don't want telemetry on their machines – surely thatsthe whole point is collecting data is to react to it? so why do we still have it? pass the aspirin. Surely the hordes of us who do disable it at EVERY turn is a big enough 'sign' to just remove it? Crazy thought eh….

Capsee 1 2 – No More Accidental Caps Lockers

I simply folded a small piece of paper and wedge it under the caps lock key.

Have you tried Uncap? It is a really tiny and simple tool to remap or disable keys that I stumbled upon while reading Vim wiki. Give it a shot: github.com/susam/uncap#uncap

By default (i.e. if you just double-click uncap.exe), it maps Caps Lock to Escape, a very useful mapping for Vim users like me. If you want to disable Caps Lock completely, you just need to execute this command after you download the tool.

Though I was terribly afraid of remapping the ScanCode Map in the registry, I carefully followed your instructions and could disable that pesky Caps Lock Key that kept turning on. You've saved my sanity afters hours of trying other methods. Thank you ever so much!

I'm sorry to say that the above instructions ONLY Helped A SHORT WHILE!! The blasted caps lock is back again….

Capsee 1 2 – No More Accidental Caps Locked

I find very annoying that once I have pressed the Caps Lock key, it remains active indefinitely and therefore after a few moments (maybe a minute or two) I don't need it any longer but it remains active, so when I resume typing the characters are in upper caps; every time I have to delete and toggle-off the Caps Lock key and this keeps on coming and coming and happening again and again over the months and years… At the end it is very annoying. Instead it would have been very useful if the Caps Lock key had a built-in time-off behaviour, in other words, when you toggle-on the Caps Lock characters go into upper caps mode and as long as you type the Caps Lock key remains on. But if you stop typing for say 30 seconds it will go off automatically. This would be a very handy feature, if you need to continue typing in upper caps you just toggle it on again, otherwise you don't have to worry if you forgot to turn it off when you need to switch to lower caps, as it will have gone off automatically in 30 seconds. What do you think?
